Stop the unit two feet from the trailer. Apply the park brake and visually check the height of the run-up ramps to ensure they match.
Take a quick look in your mirrors to see if you are straight and inline with the trailer.

Adjust your height indictor to match the trailer.

If the trailer and unit heights do not match you should?

Adjust suspension to align height as required.
Adjust trailer height, but adjusting the trailer legs.
Do not worry, as the 5th wheel will automatically adjust.

If the trailer height is too high, even when the units suspension has been raised, what should you do?

Ask for the trailer to be lowered (Shunter or Traffic Manager)
Lower it by using the trailer legs
Try to see if the 5th wheel will catch the pin.
Use blocks to raise the unit's rear axle.

When reversing under the the trailer – (Where fitted)

The trailer should slide up the run-up ramps and the driver should feel the weight of the trailer on the rear of the unit.
The run-up ramps should miss the trailer and the 5th wheel should just touch the trailer.
The 5th wheel should be just below the trailer pin.

Why should you visually check that the correct coupling has taken place and there is no gap between the trailer rubbing plate and the 5th wheel.

It is possible that you have missed the pin, but caught on something else.
Its not important.

Once you have taken a visual check of the coupling what should you do before undertaking the ‘tug’ tests.

Raise the unit suspension so that the trailer legs are no more than 1 inch above the ground level.
Fit the 5th wheel safety device.
Connect the air and electrical suzies
Full raise the units suspension.

What is a ‘tug’ test?

The vehicle is put into forward gear and the vehicle is 'shunted forward' twice to ensure that the pin has connected correctly.
The vehicle is put into reverse gear and the vehicle is 'shunted backwards' twice to ensure that the pin has connected correctly.
Each air line is pulled to ensure they are connected.
The vehicle is shunted forward twice gainst the handbrake to ensure it holds.

Once you have completed the ‘tug’ test it is essential that you do what before leaving the cab?

Apply the unit's park brake.
Insert your 'digicard'.
Turn off all your lights.
Adjust your height indicator.

This ensures that the trailer is at the most suitable height for the next unit to connect safely.
With the legs close to the ground prevents possible damage to the rear of the unit when uncoupling.

UNCOUPLING

To draw out the unit from the trailer safely, you should?

Draw out the unit from the trailer by approximately 12 inches then apply the handbrake. Lower the unit suspension until there is no contact with the 5th wheel. Only at this stage should you pull the unit out fully.
Slowly draw out the unit from the trailer until the clear of the trailer.
Draw out the unit from the trailer a couple of inches then apply the handbrake. Lower the unit suspension until there is no contact with the 5th wheel. Only at this stage should you pull the unit out fully.
Lower the suspension and then slowly draw out the unit from the trailer.

Once uncoupled, what two tasks should you complete?

Remove trailer number plate and stow away in sites agreed location.
Conduct your post vehicle check.
Release the trailer brake.
Check the lights on the unit.
